This 4-part series will be a hoot as we dive deep into fractions!

There is considerable research (Siegler, 2012, 2015, 2016) to show that success in high school mathematics is closely correlated with student’s confidence with fractions. This is not surprising when strands such as ratio and proportions, algebra and problem solving in general are analysed. Therefore, it is essential that we give elementary students appropriate experiences in all aspects of fractions to better prepare them for success in high school and beyond.
These sessions will:
- Explore all four representations that are needed to develop a deep understanding of fractions.
- Consider the four very different ways that fractions should be ‘interpreted’ in elementary school.
- Introduce mental strategies for comparing fractions – beyond finding a common denominator.
In short, these sessions will give you many “aha” moments about why your students might be struggling with fraction concepts, and equip you with new ways of thinking about fraction instruction for all your students.

1. Using multiple fraction representations to build a foundation of success in mathematics
May 13, 2021
7:00 PM EST
This webinar will introduce and explore the four different representations of fractions that must be covered in the elementary grades and why each is so critical. In so doing, you will be better prepared to monitor how each representation will either support or interfere with students’ understanding of fraction concepts.
2. Exploring the different interpretations of fractions that should be covered in elementary school
May 27, 2021
7:00 PM EST
This webinar will consider the three very different ways that fractions should be ‘interpreted’ in elementary school and how an understanding of these can help your students better prepare for success in high school and beyond!.
3. Naming and relating the types of fractions
June 10, 2021
7:00 PM EST
How do you define an improper fraction? This session will identify the many types of fractions taught in elementary school and explore ways to make connections among them.
4. Exploring the strategies for comparing common fractions in elementary school
June 24, 2021
7:00 PM EST
We often use common denominators to compare two fractions. But can you name three other efficient strategies for comparing fractions? This session will investigate the four strategies that should be taught in elementary school.
