Mathematics for Young Minds Measurement is an instruction activity book for early childhood activity approaches and involves quantifying to an attribute that a physical object possess. Young children can easily describe the color of a cup, but methods to quantify its measurement attributes are not as easy.
The activities in this book focus on four attributes of measurement: length, area, capacity (or volume), and weight (or mass). In this book, volume and capacity are grouped together because these ideas are closely related at the early stages of learning, and activities for these attributes are similar.
Four key sequential stages of development are included for each measurement attribute in this book. These stages encompass the beginning of the overall development of measurement attributes, and each expands the language and ideas of the particular attribute. Language associated with measurement attributes is the critical aspect to children developing a deep conceptual understanding. The easiest way to develop this language is to involve children in activities where they compare the amount of the attribute that objects share.
The Measurement book includes:
Individual, small-group, and whole-class activities
